The City of Vancouver is transitioning to federal and provincial single-use regulations, which align with and extend beyond the city's single-use item by-laws. This change aims to reduce waste and litter from single-use items and work with businesses, charities, and not-for-profits for long-lasting change. The city will no longer regulate single-use items as responsibility shifts to federal and provincial governments. The transition will happen in two phases: April 9, 2024, for foam containers, plastic straws, single-use utensils, and plastic shopping bags; and July 15, 2024, for paper and reusable shopping bags.
